Saint Louis Zoo created our first-ever Animal Ofrenda for Día de los Muertos! An ofrenda is an altar displayed during the traditional Mexican and Latin American celebration of Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) to honor cherished relatives and pets who have passed away. Animal Care staff provided photos in memory of animals who they have cared for and loved over decades at the Zoo and our entire staff submitted pictures of beloved pets who have passed away. The Zoo altar includes the tradi

The life cycle of insects from egg–or grub–to full grown is amazing to see! The Saint Louis Zoo is home to one of only a handful of exhibits in North American zoos dedicated solely to the fascinating world of bugs and other invertebrates, which make up more than 95% of species in the animal kingdom. Keepers at the Bayer Insectarium raise and care for thousands of these animals each year, but also take part in conservation field work releasing imperiled invertebrate species into the wild! Insects

Look who’s new: Two Amur leopard cubs were born at Saint Louis Zoo on Aug. 13, 2025! This is the second litter for 7-year-old parents Dot and Samson, and a significant addition for this critically endangered species — only about 100 Amur leopards remain in the wild today. Dot and her little ones are bonding in a private, indoor maternity den for now. It’ll be a few months before the family is ready to make a public debut, but we’ll be sharing plenty of photos and video in the meantime! Follow al

No matter how snowy it gets, Saint Louis Zoo keepers and other Zoo staff are here to make sure animals get the best care (and some fun snow enrichment inside!) We are closed to the public today, but enjoy these scenes captured by keepers from our snow closure days earlier this week. | Saint Louis Zoo

Many who celebrate Easter hard boil dozens of eggs this time of year, but Saint Louis Zoo animals eat a combined 3,800 eggs a year! Keepers at the Orthwein Animal Nutrition Center – the "grocery store" of the Zoo – work hard preparing meals for all the animals early each morning. While most of the food they order, prepare and deliver is raw, nutrition keepers make hundreds of hard-boiled eggs each month to provide a good source of protein and enrichment for the animals. Most eggs are eaten by pr

How is Jet already ONE YEAR OLD? 🎂🎉 In 2024, Jet became the first Asian elephant born through artificial insemination at the Saint Louis Zoo. Since then, he’s quickly captured the hearts of many Zoo guests and his passionate animal care team. Jet spent his first year playing, exploring and learning from mom Jade and “Auntie” Sri. Keepers at the Saint Louis Zoo work to enrich the lives of the animals in their care every day. They add interesting and complex activities to the animals’ daily routines. Enrichment activities – like painting – are fun for both animals and keepers! Keepers provide non-toxic paint, and the resulting animal artwork is used for fundraising for the St. Louis Chapter of American Association of Zoo Keepers. At this time, the paintings are not available due to the Zoo’s closure and limited staff. #Bri

We're back open with lots of incredible animals to see as Zoo staff continues working hard to clear debris from Friday's storm. Friday's EF-3 tornado swept through a section of Forest Park. The Zoo was right outside the tornado's path, but we still saw powerful winds that downed hundreds of trees. Some 10,000 guests were at the Zoo that day, but thankfully no animals or people were hurt. Animals have access again to most habitats, but we expect to reopen even more, including the River's Edge are

Say hello to a few (thousand) new arrivals at the Zoo! 🐜🍃 A new leafcutter ant colony recently moved into the Bayer Insectarium, and these tiny farmers are already hard at work. Guests can spot them marching leaf-by-leaf on a vine in their window exhibit now. The window also offers a peek at our invertebrate keepers behind the scenes! Leafcutter ants don’t actually eat the leaves. They use their powerful mandibles to snip off pieces and carry them home to grow a special fungus. That fungus? It
