A shot in the dark ✨ While most galaxies shine bright, a rare type remains nearly invisible — low-surface-brightness galaxies dominated by dark matter and containing only a scattering of faint stars. (Dark matter is an invisible form of matter that does not reflect, emit, or absorb light.) Hubble managed to identify one such elusive object, dubbed CDG-2, by revealing a close collection of four globular star clusters in the Perseus galaxy cluster, 300 million light-years away. Follow-up studies t

For decades, astronomers believed that one day, our Milky Way Galaxy would collide with our nearest major galactic neighbor, Andromeda. Now, with the latest Hubble data and computer simulations, our galaxy's fate isn't as certain. Find out more: https://go.nasa.gov/43Irb8m | NASA's Hubble Space Telescope

A galaxy far, far away… 67 million light-years, to be exact. NGC 2775 sports a smooth, featureless center that is devoid of gas, resembling an elliptical galaxy. But it also has a dusty ring with patchy star clusters, like a spiral galaxy. So which is it: spiral or elliptical — or neither? Because we can only view NGC 2775 from one angle, it’s difficult to say for sure, though most astronomers classify it as a flocculent spiral galaxy. Flocculent spirals have poorly defined, discontinuous arms t

Glowing galaxies crowd this Hubble view of the galaxy cluster Abell 3192. Like all clusters of galaxies, this one is full of hot gas that emits powerful X-rays, and it's also enveloped in a halo of something called dark matter – which is like the invisible scaffolding of our universe. All this matter, though not visible, has a huge effect on Abell 3192. That enormous amount of mass, combined with the mass of all these galaxies as well, is strong enough to curve spacetime around it. This is calle

Ready for Hubble's largest ever photomosaic? Over the course of a decade, scientists compiled about 600 Hubble images of our nearest major galactic neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy. This 2.5-billion-pixel image allows astronomers to study its individual stars, and uncover Andromeda's history of galactic collisions and mergers, all in meticulous detail. Andromeda's headed our way, too. In about 4.5 billion years, it'll merge with our home galaxy, the Milky Way. In the meantime, we can use Hubble's

Round and round we go! This spiral galaxy is called NGC 2985. At about 70 million light-years away, its tightly wound spiral arms widen as they extend outward from the galaxy's bright core. Spiral galaxies like this one tend to run into other galaxies in space, often resulting in galactic mergers. These events scramble up the winding structures of the original galaxies, smoothing and rounding out their shape. Image credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, L.
