The first foam material specifically formulated for a marine environment was a poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and isocyanate blend (simply called PVC foam) created in Germany by Dr. Lindemann in the late 1930's and 40's. It has been rumored that this early version of PVC foam was used in the German E-boats and even in the famous 'Bismarck' battleship.

A full planing 20 kts seems to be a bit much here, as it will require a bigger engine and bigger tanks, which will require even more buoyancy aft to support them. This will likely mean a wider and deeper transom.

The centerline of each hull is moved outboard slightly giving a wider centerline to centerline beam than a symmetric hull with the same overall beam. It's all a trade off. I love the asymmetric design, aesthetically and in practice.

May 23, 2006 · Each hull would be 18-22 inches wide and about 24 feet long. The long narrow shape would also help keep the boat efficient when moving slowly in displacement mode. Design speed would be somewhere in the 60 mph range. Any help or pointers to good books on planing hull and/or power catamaran design would be greatly appreciated.
