Jul 8, 2024 · According to UNHCR, over 2 million children were born as refugees from 2018 to 2023. Children are dramatically overrepresented among the world’s refugees. Though they make up less than one third of the global population, children comprised 40 per cent of the world’s refugees in 2023.

Globally, there are tens of millions of refugees and internally displaced children and families struggling to survive, awaiting humanitarian aid or safe harbor. A look at how UNICEF and partners work to protect children on the move.

Today, 27 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution. At a time when half of the world's refugees are children, our work to help child refugees is more important than ever.

Nearly half of all refugees are children, and almost one in three children living outside their country of birth is a refugee. [1] . These numbers encompass children whose refugee status has been formally confirmed, as well as children in refugee-like situations.

UNICEF works around the world to help protect the rights of migrant and displaced children. We provide life-saving humanitarian supplies in refugee camps. We run child-friendly spaces – safe places where children on the move can play, where mothers can rest and feed their babies in private, where separated families can reunite.

Children constitute over 40 per cent of forcibly displaced and stateless persons. Situations of forced displacement and statelessness can have a lifelong, devastating impact on the lives and development of children – from infancy and childhood through to adolescence and adulthood.

Over the past decade, the global refugee population has more than doubled, with children making up almost half of the world’s refugees. These children need the world’s solidarity and support. From Ukraine to Afghanistan, Myanmar to Syria, every refugee child has the same rights.

Jun 13, 2023 · Of the 43.3 million children who were forcibly displaced by the end of 2022, almost 60% (25.8 million) were internally displaced by conflict and violence. The number of refugee and asylum-seeking children also hit a new record of 17.5 million, a number that does not even include those newly displaced in 2023, including by the conflict in Sudan.

Child refugees desperately need protection from a wide range of violence, including abuse, exploitation and neglect. Child marriage remains a growing concern among refugee children as well. The total global refugee population is the highest it's ever been.
