On the 80th anniversaries of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, survivors continue searching for remains and healing—and Americans remain divided over whether the bombings were justified.

Wednesday marks the 80th anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Following are some facts about the bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima and a second attack on Nagasaki three days later -- the only times nuclear weapons have been used in war.

On Aug. 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and three days later, dropped another one on Nagasaki.
