A powerful earthquake hit Japan’s north-central Noto region on Tuesday evening, just months after the area was devastated by a deadly quake earlier this year. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the magnitude 6.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Japan's Ishikawa prefecture on Tuesday, the country's meteorological agency reported. The earthquake, which occurred at 1347GMT, had an epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).

A woman in her 70s was later reported injured in the town of Tsubata, Kyodo news agency reported, citing the prefectural government.

TOKYO -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 jolted off Japan's western Ishikawa Tuesday, according to the country's weather agency. The temblor occurred at 10:47 pm local time at a depth of 10 km, measuring lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of the prefecture, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Earlier on 1 January 2024, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto region, killing more than 370 people and damaging roads and other infrastructure.
