In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, according to the Library of Congress. Both Wilson, in 1916, and President Coolidge, in 1927, issued proclamations asking for June 14 to be observed as National Flag Day.

Hundreds of rallies across the county are being planned on Saturday. They include Sarasota, Venice, Ellenton and Englewood. The largest of the local rallies is planned in Sarasota, from 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday at JD Hamel Park on the Bayfront. That rally is sponsored by the Democratic Women’s Club of Sarasota County.
