A ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia held on Monday and military commanders from both sides met to discuss measures to maintain the truce, as some residents along the disputed frontier trickled back home after five days of intense fighting.

The Thailand-Cambodia conflict is another possible chance for China’s arms to be displayed as being at least as good as Western—specifically, American—arms.

"The U.S. already flunked the test and that should be a wakeup call," a former senior U.S. State Department official told Newsweek.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson on Sunday said China will maintain its fair and impartial position and continue close communication with Cambodia and Thailand, actively facilitate talks for peace and play a constructive role for a ceasefire.

The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to meet to negotiate a ceasefire, according to a social media post by United States President Donald Trump on Saturday.
