A Powerball ticket sold in California won $562,699 but just missed the $409 million jackpot, lottery officials say. The ticket matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball in the drawing Wednesday, Oct. 16, the California Lottery said. It was sold at Quality Market in Newcastle, which is about a 30-mile drive northwest from Sacramento.

“I had to keep checking,” the man said. “I couldn’t believe it.” The man matched four numbers and the Powerball, missing the $245 million jackpot by one number, leaving him with a third-tier win, lottery officials said. The Nottingham man told lottery officials he plans to tuck his winnings away into savings.

According to California Lottery's website late Wednesday night, a ticket worth $562,699 was sold at the Quality Market on Main Street in Newcastle, located about 30 miles away from Sacramento. The news comes as Powerball held a drawing for the then-top prize of $408 million.
