そんな折、知人で作家のHugh Howey氏が約10年前に独自の執筆アプリ「NEO」の開発に着手していたことを知った。元ソフトウェアエンジニアである同氏も、多くの文章作成ソフトが執筆者のニーズに対して多機能過ぎると感じていたという。
