Michiganders — and sky watchers in other parts of North America — got a glimpse of the northern lights Thursday night, which space prediction scientists have said is more likely this year than others because the sun is at the peak of its activity cycle.

It seems like Michigan has flipped from "I never get to see the Northern Lights" to "Hey they’re here!" so quickly. Why? The answer lies in Outer Space.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, represent waves of light from solar wind, creating a display of moving lights in the night sky.

A northern lights map shows any state caught in the red view line could see the aurora over the next two nights.

States close to the Canadian border will have a chance at seeing the northern lights Wednesday nights, as space weather conditions likely die down leading into the weekend, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast.
