Republican Vice President-elect JD Vance said on Thursday he will resign from his U.S. Senate seat from Ohio at midnight ahead of his inauguration later this month.

Two years ago this week, JD Vance began a career on Capitol Hill. As he resigns, that part of the Ohio Republican's career is now over.

After Carter's death on Dec. 29, President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 as a national day of mourning, closing all executive departments and agencies of the federal government on the same day. Biden also ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days.

President Joe Biden was in his first term as senator for Delaware in 1977 at the time Carter was in office. Biden will be at Carter’s funeral Thursday morning to give a eulogy to the late 39th president.
