Though not all of its members were actually gay, Village People were quite literally built from queer iconography. The leather man, construction worker, cowboy and other “macho types” weren’t random costumes – they were walking embodiments of gay male fantasy archetypes, recruited from New York gay clubs.

Victor Willis, who also co-wrote the song, says it is not a “gay anthem.” On Facebook, he wrote people assumed that because his writing partner and some members of the band were gay but he said he did not know the YMCA was a place for gay men to hang out when he wrote the song.
