Pearl Harbor survivor Robert “Bob” Fernandez has died. He passed away Wednesday in Lodi, California, at the age of 100. Fernandez was 17 years old when he enlisted in the Navy in 1941, and served as a mess cook on the USS Curtiss when Japan launched an aerial attack on Pearl Harbor.

Two survivors of the bombing — each 100 or older — are planning to return to Pearl Harbor on Saturday to observe the 83rd anniversary of the attack that thrust the U.S. into World War II.
