A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclone, bringing heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Schools and colleges in Nagapattinam district are closed tomorrow due to the heavy rain warning.

Huge acreage of salt pans in the districts of Nagapattinam (Vedaranyam) and Villupuram (Marakkanman) came under water.

A total of 17 disaster response teams, comprising NDRF and state personnel, have been dispatched to vulnerable areas such as Chennai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Thanjavur districts.

Tamil Nadu will get heavy rains due to the cyclone as the RMC has issued heavy rains alert for 18 districts today. The state will witness heavy rains for next three days.

A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and expected to become a cyclonic storm, named Fengal, by November 27. It's currently southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, and moving towards the Tamil Nadu coast.

Moving north-northwestwards at 12 km/h, the storm system is expected to bypass Sri Lanka’s coast and approach Tamil Nadu within the next two days. However, slightly cooler sea surface temperatures closer to the coastline could weaken the system marginally before landfall.

The system is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm within 24 hours, with potential landfall along Tamil Nadu's coast by the end of the week.
