Cases of whooping cough have more than tripled in North Dakota compared to last year, including four infants who needed to be hospitalized, the Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday.

North Dakota Health and Human Services (ND HHS) says whooping cough cases are up this year and not just among babies. In September, Portland State had to cancel a football game against South Dakota because of an outbreak amongst the team.

More cases of pertussis, or better known as whooping cough, are being reported throughout the US. If you haven’t been vaccinated for it, now is the time, especially since the respiratory infection can be contagious.

Cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, are more than four times higher in North Dakota and nearly 17 times higher in Minnesota than in 2023.
