The government of President Emmanuel Macron collapsed Wednesday after the National Assembly voted for the first time in more than a half-century to oust a prime minister from office, a sign of the political gridlock that has paralyzed France,

France’s far-right and left-wing lawmakers joined together to vote Wednesday a no-confidence motion prompted by budget disputes that forces Prime Minister Michel Barnier to resign.

Prime Minister Michel Barnier will most likely remain as a caretaker until a replacement is named. But the vote could further unsettle credit markets and create a wider opening for the far right.
