Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in a speech to crowds of supporters days before Donald Trump is sworn in as US head of state, vowed her country would not be subordinated by its northern neighbor.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said Sunday she expected "good" relations marked by "dialogue" with US President-elect Donald Trump when he returns to the White House in a week.

As is often the case with Trump, it’s unclear whether his remarks are to be taken at face value or if he's simply trying to stir the pot.

Mexico's president on Wednesday responded sarcastically to Donald Trump's proposal to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Standing before a global map, Claudia Sheinbaum suggested dryly that North America should be renamed “América Mexicana”,

Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country. As I have said, we coordinate and we collaborate, but we don’t become subordinated.”
