As part of the new House of Representatives's first order of business, lawmakers have fast-tracked a bill that would amend Title IX and ban transgender athletes from competing in women's sports.

That’s the hope of Rep. Greg Steube, who is running back his Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. The bill would federalize protections amateur female athletes in Florida currently enjoy. “The radical left is not in step with the American people on the issue of protecting women’s sports,” said Rep. Steube.

If passed into law, the legislation would change Title IX and revoke federal funding for schools that allow trans girls in women’s sports.

The legislation is a cornerstone of the GOP’s education agenda and would deliver on a priority for the incoming Trump administration.

Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar, both of Texas, were the only Democrats to side with Republicans on Tuesday to pass legislation meant to bar transgender athletes from competing in girls and women’s sports.
