Art Laboe, the DJ and music promoter who spent 79 continuous years on the radio, was an innovator of the compilation album and coined and trademarked the term “Oldies but Goodies,” has died.

In 1957, he started Original Sound Record Inc. and in 1958, released the compilation album “Oldies But Goodies: Vol. 1,” which stayed on the Billboard’s Top 100 chart for 183 weeks.

In 1957, he started Original Sound Record, Inc. and in 1958, released the compilation album “Oldies But Goodies: Vol. 1," which stayed on the Billboard's Top 100 chart for 183 weeks.

He also saw the appeal of “oldies” practically before they were old. Around 1949 he had started working at KRKD in Los Angeles, selling advertising by day and playing music in the wee hours.

September saw the quintet release "Oldies But Goodies," a 31-track greatest hits collection. In the past 18 months, the group has been preparing to open Odie's, a Music Row watering hole.

Laboe is credited with inventing the "oldies, but goodies" phrase, as well as with helping end segregation in Southern California by organizing live DJ shows that attracted a diverse audience.
