The 2024-25 Mountain West preseason men's basketball poll shows the New Mexico Lobos are predicted to finish second in the conference this season.

Boise State senior forward Tyson Degenhart was voted the preseason player of the year. San Diego State forward Pharoah Compton earned the preseason freshman of the year award. Nevada fifth-year guard Kobe Sanders was named the preseason newcomer of the year The 6-6 transfer averaged 19.6 points for Cal Poly last season.

Well, this is awkward. San Diego State is picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West men’s basketball preseason media poll announced Thursday morning, the first time in Brian Dutcher’s eight seasons as head coach that the Aztecs haven’t been first or second — and only the second time in the last 17 years they’ve been outside the top three.

Last year's Wolf Pack squad finished with a 26-8 overall record, including a 13-5 mark in the Mountain West, second-best in the conference.
