Their studies have shown the importance of giving people a real democratic voice for countries’ economic survival, the Nobel committee said.

The winner of the award, officially the "Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel," receives $1 million.

MIT economists Acemoglu and Johnson, with UChicago's Robinson, won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for their work on political systems and economic growth.
