British oil and gas major Shell on Tuesday settled a London lawsuit it brought against environmental group Greenpeace after activists boarded a Shell oil production vessel last year.

Shell and Greenpeace have settled one of the largest legal claims against the environmental group, brought after protesters occupied a Shell floating production unit near the Shetland Islands in 2023.

The environmental protest group is to give the RNLI a hefty donation as part of its settlement terms related to a protest that lasted weeks last January.

Oil giant Shell has dropped its legal action against Greenpeace UK, who it was suing for $2.1 million or £1.7 million in damages after protestors occupied one of its vessels for 13 days last year. The dispute has been settled with Greenpeace agreeing to make a £300,000 donation to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Greenpeace International and Greenpeace UK have agreed with Shell to settle the oil giant’s multimillion-dollar intimidation lawsuit over a peaceful protest conducted by the campaign groups last year.
