The Punjab Kings built a decent squad after the IPL 2025 auction. Having had the biggest purse walking into the two-day mega auction, Punjab were able to fill all the gaps needed including a new captain but the coach Ricky Ponting was on the receiving end of criticism of favouring Australians.

Punjab Kings, led by Ricky Ponting, had a successful IPL 2025 super auction, rebuilding their team strategically. They secured Arshdeep Singh using their Right-to-Match card for Rs 18 crore and made Shreyas Iyer their most expensive buy at Rs 26.

Punjab Kings had only retained two players ahead of the auction and both of them were uncapped. In the run up to the auction, the Punjab franchise also brought in Ricky Ponting as their head coach. In the auction, they have tried to buy some good Indian players alongside trusted overseas names.

Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has reacted to the criticism of signing too many Australians for the franchise. Speaking after the IPL auction, Ponting said that those players fit their respective roles perfectly.

India beat the Aussies at the Optus Stadium in Perth by 295 runs which left Ponting baffled. According to Ponting, the conditions never favoured India, however, that did not stop Jasprit Bumrah’s side from clinching the Test.

Punjab Kings bought five Australian players - Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie and Xavier Bartlett - at the recent IPL mega auction in Jeddah.
