A Nebraska legislative committee took up four medical marijuana bills on Monday—including three different plans to implement the state’s voter-approved cannabis law adopted last November as well as a proposal that would forbid all forms of cannabis except for pills and tinctures.

Nebraska’s top law enforcement officer urged lawmakers to not pass any medical marijuana regulations this legislative session, saying pending litigation could render it moot. But that didn’t stop lawmakers from considering bills that would set the framework for implementing medical marijuana across the state at a General Affairs Committee hearing on Monday.

The clock is ticking for Nebraska lawmakers to set up the framework for how to regulate medical marijuana in the state. In November, voters approved medical cannabis in Nebraska and set up a commission to regulate the industry by over 70%.

The fight to secure a safe, regulated medical cannabis system in Nebraska could hinge on whether lawmakers adopt legislation this spring.
