Universal/DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” remake has taken off at the box office with a strong $82.5 million domestic opening weekend and $200 million worldwide.

How to Train Your Dragon has breathed fire into a crowded weekend box office. The film landed in first place with $35.6 million (£26.2 million) in sales in the US, according to The Numbers. Projections show that the fantasy adventure film is on its way to making upwards of $200 million (£147 million) globally.

On the set of the live-action movie, Toothless and the other dragons existed as large puppets with simple functions, operated by a team of master puppeteers led by Tom Wilton, a performer who had worked on the “War Horse” stage play.

Dean DeBlois, one of the animated film's directors, returns to direct the live-action adaptation. Also returning is actor Gerard Butler ("300," "Law Abiding Citizen") as Hiccup's father, Stoick the Vast.
