The latest quake follows an 8.8 magnitude earthquake near the Kamchatka coast on Wednesday, which sparked a Tsunami that triggered emergency declarations in both Russia and the U.S.

The Kuril Islands stretch from the southern tip of Kamchatka Peninsula. Russian scientists had warned on Wednesday that strong aftershocks were possible in the region in the next several weeks.

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck east of the Kuril Islands on Thursday at a shallow depth of 10 km, the NCS reported. This follows a 6.3 quake in the region a day earlier.
