Juneau — the entrance point to the Mendenhall Glacier, a favorite cruise ship excursion — sees as many as 20,000 cruise passengers per day during the high season, which runs from April to October.

Final election results showed just over 60% of registered voters were against the idea. But plans for a new cruise ship dock on Douglas Island are complicating things.

Royal Caribbean aims to show its commitment to addressing Juneau's community concerns and frustrations with a new port far from downtown.

Goldbelt and Royal Caribbean are planning a port on the far side of Douglas Island, avoiding tourist congestion at Juneau’s waterfront.

Juneau residents voted against a proposition to ban large cruise ships from docking in the town on Saturdays. According to its supporters, the “Ship-Free Saturday” initiative was aimed at giving Juneau’s residents “a respite” from the influx of tourism.

A new port on Douglas Island will be built by Royal Caribbean and Goldbelt Inc., reducing traffic in downtown Juneau while boosting local infrastructure.
