Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves, Mika Zibanejad had a goal and two assists and the New York Rangers defeated the visiting Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Monday night.

Igor Shesterkin is set to start in net tonight for the New York Rangers against the Detroit Red Wings. Shesterkin was the first goalie off the ice during morning skate on Monday, indicating that he will get the start. The 28-year-old goaltender played in the two other regular season games for the Rangers as he’s yet to take a night off.

Reilly Smith padded the lead with his first goal as a Ranger early in the third, roofing a wrister from the top of the right circle to make it 3-1. It came on the second assist of the night for Zibanejad, who later added an empty-net goal after going point-less in the first two games.

Zibanejad had only one shot on goal through the first two Rangers games. He doubled that in the first period and finished the game with five shots. One came on an empty net, giving him his first goal of the year, and he also had a pair of primary assists.

Despite the 2024-25 season being underway, the New York Rangers will still try and sign Igor Shesterkin to a huge extension.

According to Chris Johnston, speaking on Thursday's episode of "The Chris Johnston Show," Shesterkin's negotiations have hit an intriguing point where he may accept a seven-year deal instead of the maximum eight years if the Rangers meet his salary demands.
