A severe geomagnetic storm reached Earth on Thursday, which could bring an increased chance of auroras and may affect communications and the power grid.

Another day of coronal mass ejections from the sun is expected to produce a "severe" geomagnetic storm, leaving parts of Earth's skies glowing with aurora.

The storm is a result of a coronal mass ejection, CME, that sped toward Earth at 2.5 million mph. A coronal mass ejection is a large expulsion of plasma and magnetic field from the sun’s corona, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Forecasters predicted one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms in decades, pushing the northern lights farther south.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, the northern lights were visible in Southwest Ohio on Thursday night thanks to a severe geomagnetic storm. Cincinnati was just outside the view line of Thursday's aurora forecast but people here were still able to see a dazzling display.
