CES 2026 is in full swing in Las Vegas, with the show floor open to the public after a packed couple of days occupied by press conferences from the likes of Nvidia, Sony, and AMD and previews from Sunday’s Unveiled event.
Jan 5 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) CEO Lisa Su showed off a number of the company's AI chips on Monday at the CES trade show in Las Vegas, including its advanced MI455 AI processors, which are components in the data center server racks that the company is selling to firms like ChatGPT maker OpenAI.
AMD’s CES 2026 desktop CPU announcements raised eyebrows by their simplicity. Despite widespread expectations of a broader 3D V-Cache refresh, the company introduced only a single new X3D processor, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
AMD also compares the Ryzen AI Max+ directly against the Apple MacBook Pro M5 and finds it to offer superior performance in local AI, content creation, multitasking, and gaming. These results are plausible considering our own testing, although we don't have a MacBook Pro M5 on hand to compare against just yet.
Helios will go head-to-head with Nvidia’s own NVL systems, matching its latest NVL72’s 72 Rubin GPUs with 72 of AMD’s MI455X chips. It’s another sign that AMD is working to move further in on Nvidia’s turf in the AI data center market.

More interesting for many industry watchers, however, is what comes next. AMD said the Instinct MI500 Series is planned for launch in 2027 and will deliver a significant jump in AI performance compared with the MI300X generation. MI500 is expected to use AMD’s CDNA 6 architecture, a 2nm process, and HBM4E memory.
