General Motors, through its Cadillac brand, is officially entering the Formula 1 grid. Starting in the 2026 season, Cadillac F1 will become the sport's 11th team, marking a significant expansion for the top-tier racing series.

General Motors is set to become the first U.S. automaker with a Formula 1 team when a Cadillac-branded team joins the racing series in 2026, F1 announced Monday, ending a years-long battle between the series and former driver Michael Andretti, who initially proposed a GM expansion.

Formula 1 announced Monday that it has approved the entry of GM and Cadillac as a new team on the grid, bringing a storied American car maker into the pinnacle of motorsport.

Cadillac would be the first new team to join F1 since 2016. The Las Vegas race marks the third and final stop this year for F1 in the United States. The US. has three races, in Miami; Austin, Texas; and Las Vegas. That is more than any other country.

The Cadillac F1 team will initially be a customer team in 2026—with its engine supply to be determined. Cadillac is expected to produce its own Formula 1 engines by 2028. GM president Mark Reuss said: “As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence.

Questions surround the latest version of the bid but the project known as Andretti Cadillac could receive Formula 1 approval within weeks.

Formula 1 will expand the grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors.

Cadillac have not yet arrived in Formula 1, but they are already looking to see how they can expand beyond it.
