It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown metropolitan area as well as the larger New York metropolitan area. Its name is derived from an indigenous Lenape word ptukwsiit or tùkwsit, meaning "round foot" or Wolf Clan. While there exists an alternate theory regarding the Munsee word p'tuxseepu, which is said to mean 'crooked water' or 'crooked river', the Unami name for this location survives to this day: tùkwsitu, "place of the Wolf-Clan People".
